Helm AI is a powerful second opinion. This page sets out exactly what it can and cannot be trusted with at sea.

Helm AI supports your decision. It does not make it.

Helm AI provides decision support, not certified marine engineering advice. Verify critical work with a qualified marine professional, follow the manufacturer's documentation, and never rely on Helm AI alone for anything affecting safety of life at sea.

The captain, owner and responsible engineer remain accountable for the vessel, its systems and its crew at all times.

Where AI output is weakest

Treat guidance with extra caution when:

your vessel record is new or incomplete — fewer documents means weaker reasoning
equipment is non-standard, modified or fitted with parts from another model
a symptom involves fuel, gas, electrical bonding, steering, through-hull fittings or fire
a part number is matched by description rather than confirmed against your documentation
an hour reading, serial number or model is entered by hand and may be wrong

Never use Helm AI as your only source for

life-safety systems: liferafts, EPIRBs, fire suppression, gas detection, bilge alarms
structural, class or flag-state compliance decisions
electrical or fuel work carried out while the vessel is occupied or afloat without a competent person present
navigation, passage planning, weather routing or collision avoidance
medical situations — contact the relevant coastguard or emergency service

In an emergency

Do not open the app. Use your vessel's emergency procedures, VHF DSC distress, EPIRB or local emergency number. Helm AI is not a monitoring service, is not staffed around the clock, and never contacts emergency services on your behalf.

Beta Vessel Connectivity

Live vessel telemetry is a beta capability. It is not an alarm system and must never be relied upon to detect a developing casualty. Absent or stale data is shown honestly as awaiting, stale or lost rather than filled in with an estimate — but the absence of an alert never means the absence of a problem.

Reporting something unsafe

If Helm AI gives guidance you believe is unsafe or wrong, tell us at helmaiteams@outlook.com with the vessel, the equipment and what was suggested. Safety reports are reviewed ahead of everything else.
